Part 1 of a 2-part set of videos which are based on Gertrude Stein’s The Making of Americans. Part 2 is titled Of Americans.
An earlier text-based work The Hyphenation of Americans kickstarted these videos.
The video takes the appearance of hyphens at the end of lines in Gertrude Stein’s mammoth tome (3107 occurrences over the span of 925 pages) as main structural device. The vertical lines indicate a page, some pages have no hyphens, some have up to twelve.
